Jonathan Bishop describes his passion for baseball and umpiring in his own words:
"I grew up in Travelers Rest, SC. and I can say that my fondest childhood memories
involve baseball, and my dad. It is very meaningful to me that Greenville Little
League allows us to share our passion for the game and hopefully pass it on to
another generation. Nearly everthing I learned about the game stems from the knowledge
my father passed on to me. Whether it was on the field, in the yard, watching a game, or playing Strat-O-Matic baseball, I was learning from him. At 8 years old I was taught the catcher position. After Little
League I played at Travelers Rest High and graduated in 1996. After graduation
I attended Spartanburg Methodist Junior College. There I had the privilege of
playing with current Arizona D-Backs second baseman Orlando Hudson, and for a
team ranked as high as #2 in the nation. Then I moved on to Anderson College
where I played for 2 years and earned a degree in Exercise Science.
My dad introduced umpiring to me when I was 16. Since then, I have called games
for Northwood LL, Anderson LL, Greenville LL, USSSA, and a few others. One
intesting note is that I have never been to a clinic or taken any tests. My instructor
was my father and I also learned a few things from playing. I always do my best
to show my love for the game while I'm on the field and I really enjoy calling
games behind the plate. My favorite games have been the Major Championships I
have called the past few years. I have chosen to make Greenville LL my umpiring home because the atmosphere is
outstanding and cannot be matched. It is also the only place I know of where
I can overule my dad!!!!
When I'm not calling games, I enjoy attending Clemson University sporting events,
playing Strat-O-Matic baseball (board game) with friends, lifting weights, and
attempting to wish the Atlanta Braves to a National League Pennant.
It is an honor to be involved with such a wonderful organization. Thanks to
the players, coaches and parents for making our league the best."
.... and Thank You, Jon - You captured the spirit and family-orientation of GLL perfectly!
